INTERVENTION

Percutaneous treatments such as injections are normally very safe and do not require much time to recover. Most of the procedures are performed at the hospital in the fluoroscopy suite where Xray guidance facilitates precise needle placement upon structures that are a millimeter or so in width. Sedation will be offered for patients who have severe needle phobia undergoing therapeutic injections but not during any procedures that are for diagnostic purposes such as medial branch or ilioinguinal nerve blocks. The uncommon side effects such as infection, bleeding, prolonged nerve block, headache, nerve damage, seizure, or allergic reaction. The two major adverse events are a stroke if the therapeutic medicine is inadvertently injected into an artery that circulates to the brain and clots the blood supply or if blood continues to bleed in the epidural space and begins to compress the spinal cord. These two events would be identified immediately and treated with an emergency surgical evaluation and possible operation.
